Safetipin

Safetipin is a map-based online and mobile phone application, founded in Gurgaon, India, that works to make communities and cities safer by collecting and disseminating safety-related information on a large scale through crowd sourcing and geospatial analysis. Co-founded by Kalpana Viswanath, an advocate and activist of women’s rights, the app enhances women’s safety in cities by selecting the safest route, providing support, and offering an emergency route to the closest establishment. Safetipin works with city governments using their data and crowd-sourced safety audits to diagnose major issues and develop improvement plans. To date, Safetipin has been used by upwards of 60 000 women across 30 cities in 10 countries, collecting over 150,000 ‘pins’ or safety audits, including a comprehensive safety audit for the city of Delhi.

Safetipin is a 2017 Global Urban Innovator showcased at the NewCities Summit 2017 in Incheon Songdo, South Korea.
