José Roberto Moreira is Senior Professor of Energy at the Institute of Energy and Environment, University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil.
Prior to his current position, he worked as a nuclear physics researcher at the University of Sendai, Japan and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1975), he was also an Energy Researcher at the Princeton University, and in 1987, he moved to the Institute of Energy and Environment at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he launched a Graduate Course in Energy/Environment.
Moreover, he joined the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) from 1994 to 2011 and was one of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize laureates, and he worked for several other United Nations Programs.
He wrote more than 200 books and papers in the area of Nuclear Physics, Atomic Physics, Energy Conservation, Energy Planning and Environment.
Outside of the Academy, he was Vice-President of Companhia Energetica de São Paulo (1983-87), Secretary of Energy at the Ministry of Mines and Energy (1985 – 86), Energy Advisor of Ministry of Science and Technology (1990-91), Energy and Environment Advisor of Sao Paulo Secretary of Environment (2002-2005), Executive Director of Biomass Users Network – an international NGO from 1992-97, CEO of Biomass Users Network of Brazil (1992-2013) and director of NEGAWATT (1992-2015) – a private engineering company.
