Cities at Night
August 26, 2019 — The Big Picture
When speaking about how our cities promote active, social, positive space for residents, many of our conversations end at sundown. Our streets and parks which are vibrant and full of life during the day, are often viewed as symbols of fear, danger, and vacancy at night. This Big Picture editorial, presented by Toyota Mobility Foundation, explores how cities around the world are trying to manage and refine their ‘nighttime economy,’ which focuses on commercial revitalization and employment generation through nighttime recreation. Keeping parks open late, promoting after-dark activities, and providing reliable public transit can humanize the night and help shape more positive perspectives; not only making our cities safer and more pleasant, but improving the lives of people on non-standard work schedules. |
